Western Union wire transfers are frequently irreversible. That implies that if you transfer money by Western Union and it goes to the person you intended to send it to, you won’t be able to get your money back, even if you discover the recipient cheated you.
Western Union is frequently implicated in frauds from the opposite side because its money orders can take several days to process. As a result, if you try to sell something on Craigslist, scammers will offer to buy it and then send you a Western Union money order for more than the asking amount. (They’ll tell you some nonsense about why this impossible error occurred.) They will then request that you provide change by Western Union. Your money will have been sent, received, and vanished by the time you understand the original money order was a counterfeit.
If you can use those ways, Western Union must be a really bad bank…
That’s the problem. Western Union is not a financial institution. It’s a money transfer service that also handles telegraphs. (“Also-” as if telegraphy were still a thing) It takes so long to discover bogus money orders because Western Union isn’t a bank; it’s not connected to the banking system that generally verifies these things.
It is not a bank, but rather a money transfer business.
I’m quite sure they post warnings, but at some point you have to think of them as being accomplices to crimes because they know how frequently it happens.
I know someone who fell for a craigslist ad demanding payment via WU, only to be told by WU that they were out of luck.
As others have stated, they are not a bank, but in many countries, anti-money laundering authorities have been more stringent on corporations such as Western Union, requiring them to preserve records of the people who made a transaction. However, it is still extremely easy to exploit, especially when money flows from an affluent to a poor country. The sender, or fraud victim, is a legitimate individual, but the receiver simply uses forged documents or bribes the person who sends him the money. scam emails instruct recipients to send money via Western Union, for real its happens all the time.
When I was travelling in Asia, my family sent me money via Western Union, and some of the places I picked up the money were a complete joke. To make the transaction, my family had to provide all of their information as well as mine, however the personnel at the locations where I picked up the money merely wanted to see the transaction number.
My friend was fortunate. He was duped by the Facebook hoax. If you don’t know what it is, it’s when someone hacks into the Facebook account of a friend (not a close one) and messages you from that account with a sob tale about being robbed while on vacation.
They’ll tell you they’re fine, but they don’t have a place to stay or any money, and that all they need is a little money to obtain a place to stay for the night and they’ll be fine because the cops/insurance will come through tomorrow.
Please utilise Western Union to send them $200 so they can get a one-night hotel room.
So my pal did it. An hour later, I arrive at work and receive an IM from him asking what I would do. “I’d say fuck off because that’s a fraud,” I told him.
“No, I don’t believe it’s a hoax.”
“Word for word, buddy, it’s a well-known fraud.”
“Really? I’m not sure…”
“Here’s an article on the scam, dude.”
“However, what if it isn’t?”
“It’s a fraud, dude. She’d ask you for aid out of all the people she could ask? She doesn’t really know you.”
“Hmmmm… that’s true, but what if I’m the only one online right now?”
“Don’t you think she’d start with FAMILY? Call Western Union and tell them to cancel the order, please.”
“However… what if…”
“How long have you been doing this?”
“About one hour ago.”
“DUDE, CALL THEM RIGHT NOW.”
“I’ll consider it.”

He thanks me 30 minutes later because he decided to call them and cancel the order. He receives a message from the “female” 40 minutes later, saying, “hey, I stopped by Western Union and they stated there was nothing there for me.”
He then begins to grill the girl about how they know each other, and she falls silent. He had cancelled the order around 5 minutes before the scammer attempted to obtain it.

Typically, you receive a check or a forged money order and are instructed to return the overage via WU; the initial check is bad, but your money is gone. It’s a pity. I met a female online about a year ago who insisted on sending me money via Western Union so that I could pay for gas to come see her (6+ hours away). I’d never heard of Western Union before, and my initial impression was, “Wow, this is asking to be used for scamming people.” She informed me about sending money to people who never returned her money. I made her vow that she would never send money to strangers again. I never accepted the money and never saw her again. I was more connected and invested in another person, who is now my girlfriend. How to Receive Payment Using the Western Union App
I’m attempting to use the WU app to receive a payment from AirBnB, however when the app requests sender information, it only requests first and last name. And, because the sender is a corporation, I only have AirBNB, Inc.
I have no idea how to proceed.
Thank you ahead of time.
CANDID ADVICE
Can you accept PayPal or Stripe? Paypal is an option, but local banks do not work with PayPal directly, thus there is no way to retrieve the money or move it to my bank account (need to do international wire transfer and that is an option un the system, but is expensive below 5,000)
Is Airbnb WUing you a payment? That’s something I’ve never heard of. It seems strange.
Sure you didn’t try to dupe someone by pretending to be Airbnb and then not being able to collect the money they sent?
I don’t want to accuse you of anything; this is just odd. They would have given you the code number to collect as well as a name to use. Contact Airbnb customer support. I don’t believe we can assist you with that.
Thank you for not blaming me.
That is one of four payment methods available to hosts on AirBNB in my country. Is both speedier and less expensive than an international wire transfer. I’ve used the WU app before, but it doesn’t appear to be designed towards commercial senders, only PtP.
I had no problems going in person; it was the app that I couldn’t utilise.
Here’s an example of an AirBNB email so you don’t jump the gun the next time.
The confirmation code for this transaction is MTCN 3447361678, and it must be paid within 90 days at any Western Union location that offers the Quick Cash service.
To get the funds, you will need this confirmation code as well as a valid ID document with a photo.
Keep in mind that Western Union is in charge of implementing the various types of exchange. In addition, if they ask for the name of the broadcaster and the country of origin when you collect the money, you must provide the following information:
AIRBNB INC is the company name.
888 BRANNAN ST 4TH FLOOR, SAN FRANCISCO, CA, 94103, UNITED STATES
Phone number: 415-800-5959
That’s fascinating, I see! I was unaware of other countries’ policies. Is there a customer care number for the Wu app where you can ask how to receive from businesses that use the app? If not, you may have to go in person all the time until you add another method of receiving money. However, WU may be able to assist you.
