I recently visited to my bank’s (CCB) only location in my city that has a Western Union attached, and the personnel informed me that they do not send money out of China, just receive it.

I wanted to write this essay since I spent hours poring over web sites that gave me contradictory information and were all dated about two years ago. So I just wanted everyone looking for western union to have some up-to-date information as well.

(I saw a few sources indicating that Western Union no longer conducts international money transfers out of China, so I was prepared for failure, but these sources were from a long time ago.)

I also looked for MoneyGram-affiliated branches of my bank, but those are likewise a myth, regardless of what web lists of “locations” state.

Instead, I’m going to try a bank transfer/wire transfer.

If anyone has had luck sending money out of China through WesternUnion/MoneyGram, please share your experience in the comments. Try using Western Union in China and its a stress. Ah

Try using Western Union in China

Bank transfer is the simplest and cheapest method. There’s no reason to explore for alternatives unless you’re dealing with illegal revenue or don’t have a bank account in your home nation.

Why, if you are a US citizen, don’t you utilize Swapsy to get money out of China? Much simpler and with fewer expenses.

The fees are reasonable for little amounts, but if you send more than a few hundred, they become prohibitively expensive. You can’t also send more than 1200 in a single transaction unless you’re a high-tier user, so you must conduct many swaps and are always charged fees.

A bank transfer allows you to send as much money as you wish and the fees are always the same. And it’s actually quite simple to do.

By the way, /u/acloudcat246, the prerequisites for sending money by Western Union have always been the same as for a bank transfer, so I don’t see how that would be advantageous, unless the recipient does not have a bank account.

Because I am not a US citizen, that is not an option for me.

2 I also attempted to utilize Western Union to send money to someone outside of China about a year and a half ago. I went to seven different sites, and each indicated they could only collect money and not transmit it. I still refuse to believe this because I’ve had money given to me via Western Union from someone in China. I’m guessing that’s the age-old act of not wanting to do anything for a foreigner because it’s simply more effort.

I tried it for a week a few years ago and failed miserably. Thank the Lord for PayPal. Perhaps you’ll need an ID card to do it.

I used to use Western Union with no problems until about two or three years ago… except that I wasn’t the one transferring the money. It was done by my Chinese girlfriend (although I was standing right next to her the whole time, so it was obvious who was actually sending the money). I currently utilize Swapsy to deposit funds immediately into my US bank account.

There are a few things worth mentioning. There was no trouble sending money via Western Union 5 years ago. Things gradually became more stringent. Only CHINA POST was prepared to transmit the money to my city. After a year, they demanded that my girlfriend open a China Post bank account. When we split up, we inquired whether I could open an account and send money… they said absolutely, but it would be much easier if a Chinese person did it.

This also happened at the Bank of China… We were exchanging money in preparation for a vacation to Thailand (pre-corvid)… They informed me flatly that they didn’t want to deal with me (too much paperwork), but rather with my Chinese girlfriend. You Try using Western Union in China to know how it feels.

I’ll also point out that there has always been a (loose) restriction that a foreigner can only send 500 USD outside of China in a single transaction (think of it as 500$ per day), whereas a Chinese can send much more (5,000.. if memory serves me right). There is also a monthly restriction for both, with the foreigner’s limit being significantly lower. Try using Western Union in China.

So, my advise is to find a Chinese friend to use Western Union. Keep it under $500 so they don’t get into too much difficulty and the bank is more inclined to help, etc.

A funny and relevant side story: around 4 years ago, I was receiving money from my sister via Western Union… stepped into the bank… and they all claimed they had no idea what Western Union even was… despite the fact that there was a sign/symbol on the side of their building. After such a spectacle, the manager emerged and remarked, “Oh yes… we can do that!” It turned out that it was their first time using the system.

Since that day, whenever I ask the Chinese to do something and they say, “Oh no, we can’t do that,” I just keep insisting… and sooner or later, some top level individual discreetly says, “Yes, they can.” And that has happened more than once.

They informed me flatly that they didn’t want to deal with me (too much paperwork), but rather with my Chinese girlfriend.

I occasionally go to the bank with a Chinese friend as a backup helper, and the bank always asks that my Chinese friend send the money using their account since they don’t want to deal with foreigners. Then I inform them that doing so is prohibited and that I must do it in my name in order for it to be entirely legal. Sometimes the woman at the door will just reply “foreigners can’t do it,” and I will spend a long time arguing that we can and that I have done it previously.

Is the restriction accurate? Icbc once allowed me to transfer £2000 home all at once, with the only stipulation being I present proof of tax payment.

The quantity of money available on there is ridiculously minimal.

What’s the current mood in Guangzhou?

I need to be there on Monday and am curious what it’s like for people on the ground. Coming from Shenzhen, we’d have been locked down for days, so I’m concerned.

We can still go to the office as long as you get tested every day.

Restaurants are still open in Zhujiang New Town, while the rest of the city is only waimai.

Again, nothing can be predicted. My coworkers seem to believe that there would never be a lockdown like in Shanghai, but who knows?

My company is conveying mixed messages.

On the one hand, we were warned about the potential of having to work from home, while the manufacturing personnel stayed in hotels or at the office/plant in the event of a lockdown.

Despite this, they had a Halloween-themed carnival during lunch today, with a large crowd assembled in small areas for activities. I suppose life goes on.

As long as Zhujiang New Town can hang on…

There are 5 more days. I’ll be happy.

At Panyu, you get tested every day, school is still going on, and work is still going on. City officials said no dining in, only delivery, yet most Panyu restaurants don’t give a damn. Tomorrow, I have to go to the embassy in Tianhe, the renegade sector of Gz City, and do everything normally, although I still get tested every day.

Tianhe, please keep rocking until Monday at noon for me.

I travel all throughout Guangdong, and when I’m in between locations, say Haizhu, I put my phone in flight mode or turn it off.

When traveling, simply keep your phone in flight mode. When you know the region is a “safe” (with ccp features), turn it on. I have never received a yellow or red code.

I was traveling through Haizhu the other day with my phone turned off, so I didn’t catch a virus.

Sure. That is correct. My concern is that the area will be closed down rather than a yellow code. It’s been about 15 months since the appointment in Guangzhou. I absolutely cannot afford to miss it.

So it’s a good idea to carry two phones? One with the app and codes, and one (perhaps with a roaming HK Sim card that can still be used?) …

Restrictions are district-based, so it truly depends on where you’re going in Guangzhou. You’d be alright right now, but things move quickly, and Monday is a LONG way away.

That’s correct. I’ll be in Tianhe, so for the time being, I’m just keeping an eye on things. Will most likely travel to Guangzhou on Thursday or Friday to avoid a potential shutdown in Shenzhen.

My close Chinese friend was also intending to visit gz next week. He currently resides in Shenzhen. He opted to cancel because it appears that there may be random lockdowns based on cases in gz. He’s married with children, so his motivation for staying at home is self-evident.

Sure, that’s understandable. When we return from Guangzhou, I’m convinced we’ll be quarantined for at least a few days. My motive for going is because it is the final barrier to getting out of here. I’ve been waiting for 15 months.
