Western Union does not make use of the Stellar Network.
CANDID ADVICE
This is perplexing… I believe Western Union uses Thunes, and Thunes has collaborated with Stellar to handle WU cross-border transactions.
Claire knows Alice, and Alice knows Bob. So, Alice and Claire are best friends?
It’s their loss.
They’re already Blockbuster, but they’re not aware of it.
Although 80Bil in transactions indicates otherwise, they are indeed out of date.
If that day comes, they will use xlm directly. Why would you employ a third party like thunes? API is their area of expertise.
They are already working with ripple. Not to mention not using it.
I only view the adversary dismissing Blockchain usage as a plus! World Wire is here to upset WU, not to provide them with innovative ideas…
We at Bookstop believe that our selection of the top selling 1000 – 2000 books is all that the market requires; we don’t need the other 100,000 that some insignificant internet competitor named after a river might give…
The WU posture perplexes me. If there was ever a method to spend crypto in real life without having to convert it back to fiat, it would be GG for them, as most cryptos can be sent anywhere in the globe immediately from a wallet for $0.10 or less. It appears that their strategy is that crypto will never be utilized for normal transactions, or that they will easily get ahead of the parade if acceptance occurs.
The only articles I saw stated that WU had joined with Thunes, which had collaborated with Stellar, rather than that they were using the Stellar blockchain.
What happened to the stock? I believe it went down. Western Union’s demise benefits cryptocurrency. Everyone benefits. WU is taking a large percentage. What on earth is Western Union?
One of the few international money transfer methods.
On Friday nights when I was younger and worked at a grocery store, there would be a line of folks around the service counter filling out their WU slips (pay day for them)… They were immigrant laborers who sent a portion of their earnings back home to their families…
Sending $200 to India cost them around $13.99 at the time… That was 15 years ago, and I’m not sure what the price is now… The exchange rate offered by WU was also a shambles… Furthermore, the money took at least an hour or two to arrive in the target country, where the recipient would have to travel to a WU station, fill out a form, know the secret password, and then retrieve their transferred money in local currency…
I’m not sure how much has changed since then, but think how much faster and less expensive it would be to perform all of that with Crypto…
(WU has funded accounts in local currency all across the world – imagine if they could withdraw that money because crypto allows for remittances…….. They’re crazy not to take that path)
Of course not, WU are outright thieves. Western Union has few reasons to use Stellar or Ripple. They already have an extensive network.
Internal politics playing the Blockchain hype game to retain/assume power if Blockchain is the company’s clear direction.
That is why you read so many stories about WU investigating the adoption of various Blockchain solutions.
Should specify which personnel are in charge of each of these efforts.
Actually, they are, and you should do some research because their posture has lately changed. Also, I’m in on outstanding as well. I believe in both projects, so don’t think I’m slamming them. I simply wanted to make folks aware in case any didn’t know.
Western Union
Have any of you utilized Western Union to transfer or recieve money? If so, how was your experience? What are the fees that must be paid? How simple is the procedure?
CANDID RESPONSE
I used it several times to send money from Europe to Tunisia, and the entire process was simple and speedy. If I’m not mistaken, I paid 15 euros in fees.
I usually pay 3.5 euros per transfer, even if it is less than 1K.
Yes, the “actual” charge is low, but they constantly put wrong conversion from euro to dinar to earn a little more profit, which is why I mentioned 15€, I’m included the money lost on conversion, my mistake.
Is it possible to write the recipient’s name in Arabic because they do not have a passport?
My aunt always gives me money through it with no problems. I’ve been using it for over 5 years.
Western Union, I believe, may only be used to receive money, not transmit it.
Yeah, no problem there because I’m just going to use it to accept money. I was just curious about the percentage they take when someone gives money and how it works.
Western Union accepts foreign currency (Argentine pesos).

Hello everyone, I have a question. I’m travelling into Argentina on January 13th, so next week! I’m overjoyed. I’m beginning my endless journey through South and Central America.
When researching the financial condition, I received advice from another person who is now traveling through Argentina. The recommendation was to utilize Western Union. Most of you, as travelers, have undoubtedly seen every Western Union office in almost every nation. I’d never used it, and I had no idea what it was for.
According to this person – and I have somewhat checked it – the exchange rate used by Western Union is more than 100% better than the exchange rates used by banks. As an economist, this looks really strange to me, hence the post.
However, if I Google the exchange rate of 1 EUR to Argentine Peso, I am currently receiving 116 pesos for my 1 EURO. I opened a Western Union account, and if I send money there, I can get a whooping 231 pesos every EURO. That means my money is worth twice (!) as much.
Does anyone have any WU experience? Is this a common occurrence? Is there something I’m missing? You can find Western Union receipt template somewhere, lol.
I’d love to hear about your experiences.
CANDID ADVICE
It’s more of an Argentina thing than a Western Union one. The Argentine peso is screwed, and foreign cash (particularly the dollar, but I suppose the euro as well) is in high demand. So the black market rate (which I assume Western Union is using) is nearly twice as high as the official rate.
More information about the official black market rate for USD/ARS may be found at https://bluedollar.net/.
When it comes to inflation, Argentina is the textbook case in any economics lecture. It’s an excellent case study. Their money is messed up. Simply search for currency conversion rates over time. When I travelled 10 years ago, the exchange rate was 4 pesos to 1 USD. It is now more than 100 to 1 USD. Insane. Because no one wants to own Argentine pesos, the exchange market is skewed.
Argentina is also fantastic. I had a great time there. You’re going to have a great time. Enjoy.
Yes, this is the best rate in almost every scenario if you use the coupon codes to cancel out the fees. On my current journey, I’ve done it around ten times.
Sorry for digging this out, but I’m planning a trip. I’m a little concerned because all of the western union offices I’ve found on Google Maps have VERY terrible reviews, ranging from not having money to refusing service to not paying complete amounts. How difficult is it to locate a ‘functioning’ WU office in Buenos Aires and other Argentina cities? Can I rely on WU, or should I consider other options?
Yes, I was in Argentina during the Thanksgiving holiday. I didn’t utilise Western Union expressly (the offices were closed), but I did change money on the street at the unofficial rate (I got 194:$1). Clean US $100s get the best rate when converting cash, whereas $20s fetch roughly 10% less.
When you use credit cards or ATMs, the currency is changed at the official rate, thus you lose a lot of money.
Despite its economic challenges, Argentina is one of my favourite countries. I was eating massive steaks for $7-$10 each.
My experience with WU, while not in South America, has been negative. Poor customer service and exchange rates. I’m not sure how the WU exchange rate is higher than the rate displayed by Google. Try to find an authentic source for Argentina’s accurate exchange rate other than Google.
Argentina has an unofficial street rate that is twice as high as the official rate when using credit cards or ATMs. I have found Western Union receipt template somewhere in my grand father’s kitchen.
Crazy. It was 90 pesos per Euro in Western Union two years ago, around 75 pesos in an exchange office, and a (set) rate of 62 pesos in all official establishments.
I went when the exchange rate was 4 pesos to the dollar and the black market rate was 8 pesos. I still enjoyed the nation despite the fact that it was my first solo trip!
Yes, this is the best pricing in almost every scenario (better than the blue rate) if you use the coupon codes to cancel out the costs. On my current journey, I’ve done it around ten times.
But how precisely does it work? I’ve never used WU before. Is it necessary for me to send money to myself before travelling for Argentina? And then pay in cash at a WU office? Or should I submit it while I’m there in smaller increments?
Simply bring a large amount of new high denomination euros. It should be simple to locate cambios to exchange your money. Go to Florida Street near Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires for cambio cambio individuals. Because there are so many changes throughout the country, it is both unlawful and legal.
