So I’m one of the thousands of newcomers attempting to find an apartment in Berlin where I can receive my Anmeldung and start the immigration process. I had finally located a great place for myself when the landlord pulled the old “Send a Western Union with the security deposit and first month’s rent only to confirm you have enough money, then when I come to the country to allow you to see the apartment, we can get the cash out together” scam.
I haven’t responded yet, but I’m wondering if there is anyone I can forwards this email to in order to catch this person. Is there anything I can do, or do we just have to let these folks prey on people in severe need of a place to live?

Thank you for sharing this. This is useful because I’m moving to Berlin in a few days.
Report the mail address to the provider, which is normally abuse@…, and forwards the letter to that address. You can also report it to the police (www.onlinewache.de), but because the scammers are usually located elsewhere, those cases are frequently closed with little to show for it. Report a possible Western Union rent scammer in Berlin, no peace for the wicked.
After coach installed it, there was a problem with the Western Union Money Order Terminal.
Reconnect the terminal to the host; the same thing happened with the monogram one.
Wait…did you have your coach set up the Western Union money order machine? We’ve been waiting for almost three months for someone to come and instal it!
This is the second machine we’ve purchased… He shattered the first one. Yes, I believe I played with one today. They’re the most illogical pieces of junk I’ve ever seen. Suitable for Western Union.
Why do people pay such high fees to send money through firms like Western Union?
It appears to be considerably easier and less expensive to send monies via check, cashiers check, money order, or bank wire. In some cases, even FedExing a cashier’s check might be less expensive.
Many people use Money Gram to send money to family members living abroad. When you live in a third-world nation, especially one where credit cards are not generally accepted or accepted, the game changes.
This is more logical. Is this the majority of Western Union’s business? There simply does not appear to be enough US business. I’ll gladly pay you tomorrow for today’s hamburger. Tuesday has here! I’d be happy to pay you on Tuesday! today for a hamburger
Because they require funds immediately and may not have bank accounts. Immediately means keeping the lights on, buying food, paying rent, and posting bail.
There are much better ways to send money, but only if you have the time.
It just doesn’t seem right to pay so much money to get the lights turned on right quickly if you’ve been ignoring the light bill for so long and are so impoverished. What is a day without power worth? It can take months to get evicted if you are late on your rent. I just don’t see many circumstances when you need money right away.
If your electricity goes out, you may be charged a hefty reconnection fee. You will also be charged a higher interest rate on subsequent invoices if you go late again because they know you’re a higher risk. Finally, it may take more than a day if the company is unable to physically reconnect you to the grid at your home.
Western Union can get the money to you in minutes. Other ways can take hours or days and may necessitate the recipient having access to a bank account.
Although I understand that not everyone can open a bank account, don’t money orders and prepaid credit cards fill this void?
My guess is that there are no banks.
There will be no use of credit cards.
There is no post office in most ofw’s homes.
I’m currently in Dallas. You’ve arrived in Boston. I don’t have a bank account, and I need $300 today.
How would you go about doing this with a money order or a prepaid credit card?
Remittance to Mexico cost comparison: Circle+Volabit vs. Western Union. Bitcoin is the winner:)
Anyone with Circle and Volabit access may easily validate this test. Volabit may require access to a Mexican mobile.
Enter your Circle account and click Add Funds, then enter 100 USD and copy the bitcoin payout value to all decimal points. Enter your Volabit account, click “Vender” in the upper right corner, and paste your Circle bitcoin payout into “Cuantos Bitcoins Quieres Vender.” This will compute your ultimate payout in pesos after conversion and costs. Now Take that number in pesos and compare it to how much 100 USD is presently worth in pesos at the XE.com exchange rate. Report a possible Western Union rent scammer in Berlin, kick out scammers.
As of a few moments ago, my total cost for the remittance was $65.52 pesos! That equates to $4.86 USD. Western Union charges a minimum of $4.99 USD before factoring in the hidden exchange spread, which is already factored in the following calculation using volabit and circle.
The circle+volabit combination transfers funds from your US account to a Mexican bank account the same day, as long as both circle and volabit are operational that day. There is a little period of vol exposure + friction while you buy circle funds and transmit them to volabit, but if circle operates smoothly and volabit receives the funds promptly (which they did for me once, but there was a delay the other time), then this should work great. On average, larger payments appear to clear faster.
TL;DR: Same-day fiat-btc-fiat remittances to Mexico are now possible for less than Western Union, with the caveat that there is a 5 to 30 minute volatility exposure window as you transfer bitcoins.
Edit: Wow, I just finished a transaction with only ten dollars! After waiting 25 minutes for the bitcoin deposit to settle, I was able to sell for 119.2 pesos. My entire cost to transfer ten dollars, including the conversion rate, was $1.16 USD. I don’t think this was ever feasible before, especially for so little. To put this in context, if you wanted to exchange 10 USD for pesos in Cabo San Lucas or Cancun, you would have to pay roughly that much in a “Casa de Cambio” or currency exchange shop downtown or at the airport.
Edit: As promised, here’s the breakdown, with a third test 6 hours later:
100 USD from a US bank account -> 0.27430327 BTC acquired instantaneously on Circle with no fees.
Conversion of 0.27430327 BTC to MXN in Volabits:
Total deposit to Mexican bank account: $1276.47 MXN (after deducting $25.43 MXN in service fees).
On XE.com, the interbank exchange rate is 13.4809 x $100 USD = $1348.09 MXN (this is the optimum conversion of 100 USD, close to the exchange rate you’d obtain if you were the bank). I’m using it as a standard)
Difference between interbank exchange and actual exchange with fees: $1348.09 MXN minus $1276.47 MXN equals $71.62 MXN
$71.62 mxn / 13.4809 exchange rate from XE.com = $5.31 USD total cost for $100 USD remittance, including exchange fees and service costs.

And once the glitches are worked out, the price should only go down. Then word will get out, and soonTM only suckers will use Western Union.
This is incredible, and we are thrilled that individuals are using Volabit for this purpose. Very good walkthrough. If you are not fluent in Spanish, you can change the language of the site to English by clicking on the small globe in the navbar.
Not too shabby. Hopefully, it won’t be required to convert bitcoins to pesos in the future. Western Union will then be out of business.
That sounds wonderful, but there is a 30-minute window in which bitcoin volatility can play a significant influence. In most circumstances, the bitcoin price does not vary considerably in 30 minutes, but there is no guarantee.
Why can’t Circle and Volabit work together to remove volatility risk entirely?
We are developing instant addresses that will allow for instant conversion to pesos for applications where users should not be exposed to the volatility of Bitcoin.
That’s fantastic news. Congratulations on an excellent product. Awesome. How precisely does that work?
Essentially, it would be ideal if I could log in to Circle, click “Send Money to Volabit address,” and then it would show me the total cost in dollars for the conversion as well as how many pesos would end up in the other account. Bitcoin should ideally be entirely hidden in the backend and unknown to the user.
I believe it’s pretty excellent. When I feel compelled to do so, I make a transfer through the most trusted BTC2Paypal operator, and once you consider in Paypal’s cut and the USD-MXN exchange rate, you wind up paying somewhere between 9 and 10%, and it still takes 3-5 days to clear. The cheapest route is always LocalBitcoins in Person because you can get out on top with 1%+ or LocalBitcoins Online because you can still get out with a spread as low as -1% but you will need to put in the work required and it will take you most of the day to get it right and see everything is well.
You may potentially create an ad to sell bitcoins for Mexican pesos and receive a better rate than Volabit with a little patience.

$5.31 is a great price! Just keep in mind that Western Union is not the cheapest option for sending money from the United States to Mexico. Ria and Transfast are now less expensive than Western Union for transfers of exactly $100. You could try out different combinations here: https://www.saveonsend.com/
Volabit’s price for purchasing bitcoin is VERY cheap. You might consider using mexbt.com or bitso.com, which will save you a lot more money. We are working to reduce the currency spread; with our next push, we will close the spread, and we plan to continue decreasing it as volume increases.
I investigated them. Bitso appears to be relatively illiquid, with 10-30 transactions each day. I’m not sure how volabit settles in real time.
It is worthwhile to visit localbitcoins.com.
For instance, https://localbitcoins.com/accounts/profile/coincove/.
You would have saved approximately 60 cts in fees in this situation. Perhaps not worth it, but he is a guy whose average transaction time is 5 minutes…
