I have family in the United States and Russia, and I sent some money to help. I saw a Western Union (WU) advertisement online for no-fee transfers from a debit card to the recipient’s bank account. That looked pretty good.
WU proudly displays $0 fees… until you see the actual charges to you when they perform devious conversions…
To transmit $1,000 USD to a receiver, I’d need to send $1,300.35 in WU with no fees…. but only $1,278.66 in Wise.com (service I usually use, no affiliation). Wise includes $10.71 in fees in that $1,278.66 transaction…and it’s still less than WU.
When I started digging into it, I discovered that WU has a tiny print that mentions them determining their own foreign currency rate…. so shady.
I’m not sure if it’s only with US/CAD currency, but I’ll avoid WU for such shady activities. I understand that businesses must make a profit on services, and I don’t mind paying fees… but I want to compare apples to apples vs someone promoting No Fees, which is technically right, but my overall cost is still greater…
In this regard, do you utilize any better/cheaper/faster services to send money to your family overseas?

This is pretty standard procedure. HSBC promises free transfers as well, however you must pay their inflated exchange rates. It’s comparable to how banks don’t inform you that exchanging currency costs x amount of money, but all of the fees are included into the rate.
You already use Wise, which is one of the cheapest ways to move money over the world. Remitly and XE.com are two other options.

It’s almost as if regulation should alter at some point to make it obvious where genuine market costs (exchange rate) vs baked in fee are… low priority but yet should be enhanced so clients can make an informed purchase.
They are technically correct in that there are no costs for transfers; it is simply that their exchange rates are expensive. It’s this ridiculous grey area. If you used a wire transfer, you’d have to pay the wire transfer cost as well as the bank’s high exchange rates.

No, expecting a company to do anything for free is unrealistic.
When sending money throughout the world, I’m more concerned with ensuring the funds arrive and can be tracked than I am with the transaction’s cost.
I never stated that I expected things to be given to me for free. However, when someone advertises it as “No Fee,” certain expectations are created. For all I know, WU might execute a true No Fee/No Cost transfer as a temporary marketing measure, but the current technique is simply betting that users do not compare true costs to competing providers.
That is how currency exchange works. Everywhere. Always. Sorry, it’s not a scam; it’s just a lower rate (or a slightly different day or time, rates can move quickly).

And, lo and behold, this one doesn’t either…
So I checked out my airbnb first, carried my bags, and walked 11 minutes to another WU.
And, you guessed it, the answer is no. NO in capital letters…
So I went to EZE and asked whether they had a WU. They do! On the second floor of Terminal A, at the post office.
So I dragged my sunburned lips and exhausted legs from terminal C to terminal A, climbed the stairs, and congratulated myself on recognizing the Spanish word “correo”? correctly, and inquired whether they do WU.
Yes, he said, but something is wrong with the system today, and possibly tomorrow…
What happens if WU fails in El Calafate as well? Is it possible to cancel the WU transaction?

Yes, I did exactly that for 6 weeks and nothing went wrong. I had $4000 USD and used it to buy pesos as needed. I paid for all of my hotel stays in pesos. Every hotel has security boxes, and when I move around, I stack them and place them in various locations around my bag. You only need to be cautious, and you’ll be fine.
Maybe it was because Monday and Tuesday were public holidays.
Bringing cash is preferable, but Western Union has worked for me this trip. In my experience, it takes about three attempts to succeed.
Because Google Maps is untrustworthy, check the WesternUnion website for location information.
In Calafate, the main Western Union office closes around 10 a.m. So get there early and be prepared to wait. They don’t announce it either, so you could easily wait 40 minutes to get to the register and be told no.
I was able to get cash from the Pago Facil in Calafate, which also serves as a children’s clothing store. Googlemaps-ing near BAFT TRAVEL AGENCIA. She didn’t have any cash the next time I tried.
A bank is also present. On Av. There’s a sign for Del Libertador.
My advice is to persevere. Begin your conversations with “Tienes potencial para recibir.” Ask for their WhatsApp so you can text them if they have cash that day. Arrive early in Calafate. Go around 4 or 5 in BA.

Inquire with your hotel concierge, Airbnb host, travel guide, or another reliable individual. Don’t be a fool and tell strangers you’re carrying a lot of cash.
Look for the exchange signs in store windows as well. I exchanged my first cash at the bus station.
Or simply inquire, “Can I pay in USD?” or “How much in dollars?”
Accept no less than 200 pesos per dollar. I’ve seen exchange signs ranging from $1 to 211 pesos to $1 to 108 pesos.

I just got off the phone with them after experiencing the same scenario in the capital this week. When you click the cancel button, there is a phone number to call for a full refund, including the transfer fee.
Is this a thing? Sorry for the stupid question, but WU was my cash-out strategy. Western Union isn’t always reliable; sometimes they have cash and sometimes they don’t. I was able to get some cash in El Calafate after a few days, but it was impossible in El Chalten. Now that I’m in Ushuaia, everything appears to be in order.
Aside from that, keep in mind that if you pay in cash, you will be charged the 21% VAT tax. However, it is still less expensive than using a foreign credit card; however, if you keep your receipts, you can request a refund at the airport.
I was able to withdraw money from the WU near the intersection of Guatemala and Armenia that I had sent myself earlier today. It’s a WU location, not a partner location, and I received 60k pesos. They appeared to have a lot more.

The time of day is crucial. They collect money from locals who pay their bills or send money. Try to go around 4/5PM, after they’ve had a chance to collect a reasonable amount of cash. Don’t leave too late either. When I arrived at 7 p.m., there was a very long line.
Just curious, how do you send money to yourself using WU? I tried but failed. I went to pick up the money, but the lady at the WU office told me that according to their rules, the sender and recipient cannot be the same person… But, hey, having money problems while traveling in Argentina is part of the experience!!
